alanhinkel > The 56th season of the first United States Air Force Demo Team, started May 25,1953,designated the 3600th Air Demo Unit at Luke AFB,AZ.The name Thunderbirds was soon adopted and influenced in part by the strong Indian Culture and Folklore of the Southwest U.S.The first aircraft selected for the demo team was the straight wing F-84G Thunderjet built by Republic Aviation. The second was the swept wing F-84F.The third was the F-100 Super Sabre in 1956.The Thunderbirds became the worlds first Supersonic aerial demo team. The fourth aircraft was the Republic F-105B Thundercheif. It performed 6 shows between April 26 and May 9th 1964.Extensive modifications to the F-105 were necessary and rather than cancel the shows season to accomplish this, the Thunderbirds went back to using the F-100 Super Sabre. In the spring of 1969 the team recieved the first of the new Mcdonell Douglas F-4E Phantom II's.The F-4 conversion was the most extensive in the teams history. The latest aircraft is the General Dynamics F-16C Fighting Falcon. One of the most manueverable aircraft in service today. You can see more information at www.thunderbirds.com
