Hello and Welcome to the SmugMug Site of Alan Hinkel Photography.

I am a 39 year old Professional Photographer from Pascagoula,Mississippi. I have been serving the Mississippi Gulf Coast Area since 2009.

I have dabbled in photography since I was young using my Dad's Canon AE-1 and my brothers Canon T-50.

I started Digital Photography in 2002 after my Dad got a Nikon Coolpix E8700 Point and Shoot with reward points from a major hotel.

I got my first DSLR in 2005 (a used Canon EOS Rebel Xt) and really got serious about photography in 2007-8 after taking ,Beginners and Advanced Digital Photography, classes at the local Community College.

I started my business, with the help of my father, in Moss Point, Mississippi in 2009 and moved to Pascagoula when Anchor Square opened in 2011.

Anchor Square is 16, 1 and 2 bedroom, Hurricane Katrina FEMA Cottages that have been redone per request of the businesses.

I have a 2 bedroom cottage with a Studio in the largest room and a Gallery of framed and unframed work for sell throughout the building.

I will shoot at a location of your choice too.

I do Weddings, Portraits, Senior Portfolios, Pet Portraits, Ballgames, Solo Flights, Cars, Underwater, Aerial and any Social Events. If you want it photographed I'll probably do it. I do photo retouching if the photo seems salvagable.


I use a Canon EOS 1Dx with a EF 24-70mm 2.8L Lens. I have two Canon EOS 7Ds. One with my EF 70-200mm 2.8L IS Lens and the other with a EF 100-400mm 4.5-5.6L IS Lens. I have a Canon EOS 50D with an EF 50mm 1.4 Macro Gold Rim Lens and a Canon EOS 40D with 100mm 2.8 Gold Rim Macro Lens. So, no more changing around lenses.

So you will get top of the line photos and prints.

Marine Military and Civilian Ships : This gallery contains pictures of the First, Second and Third Legends Class Deep Water National Security Cutters. The ships bear the numbers WMSL(Legends Class Maritime Security Cutter,Large) 750,751 and 752, and the names Bertholf after the first Commandant of the United States Coast Guard,Waesche,the First Four Star Admiral of the U.S. Coast Guard and Stratton,named for Coast Guard Captain Dorothy C. Stratton (1899 – 2006). Stratton served as director of the SPARS, the Coast Guard Women's Reserve during World War II. The ships are 418 ft.long and are the First Three of Six being built at Northrop Grumman Pascagoula Shipbuilding,replacing the 378 foot Hamilton Class Endurance Cutters. Thunder on the Bay 09 : Thunderbirds Airshow (last show was twenty years ago) at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi,Mississippi.While the Thunderbirds were coming into Keesler Air Force Base they encountered some inclimate weather which damaged five of the six nose cones(Radomes) on the aircraft,which is why Thunderbirds 5 and 6 have Grey Radomes.Upon hearing the news Hill Air Force Base in Utah crated and prepared for shipment 5 new Radomes.They were shipped by Altus Air Force Base in Oklahoma in a C-17 Globemaster III.To see the full story go to www.f-16.net.news_article3356

Hurricane Katrina,pictures of the Pascagoula Area.The Destruction and Rebuilding : Please feel free to Ask Questions about my experiences and events before,through and post Katrina.My Cameras were destroyed during Hurricane Katrina and took a while to get another one,so the photos weren't right after the storm.I think I got my Nikon E8700 Point and Shoot about 3 months after the storm.Hurricane Katrina was the costliest,and one of the deadliest Storms in U.S.History,with close to 200 billion dollars in damage,and 1,836 deaths,705 Missing.19 in Jackson County,and around 209 in Mississippi.The winds jumped from category three to five status in nine hours over the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico,and reached its peak with 175 mph sustained,gusts reaching 217 mph.,and pressure at 902mbar.The storm weakened to category three status after an eyewall replacement cycle disrupted the intensity,but the storm nearly doubled in size.Hurricane force winds reached 120 miles outward from the eye.The storm lost hurricane strength when the Eye reached 150 miles inland near Meridian,Ms,and downgraded to tropical depression status near Clarksville,Tn.The remnants were distinguishable up in the Great Lakes region,and affected Eastern Canada.I was here,in Pascagoula when Katrina hit.We had to flee our home and go next door to our neighbors 2 story house and break their door down to reach higher ground.We watched our house,cars,and other things being destroyed.We had 59 percent damage to our house,but we are rebuilding.The depth of the water here(14 feet above sea level)was between 4-5 feet.If you have any questions,please ask.Thanks to everyone who helped the good people of Pascagoula,and others in Mississippi.If you worked down here and want to see what a house or other buildings look like now,let me know the name or address and I will try to put a photo on here.Thanks,Alan Hinkel.Update:30 Houses on Beach Blvd.,21 Inhabitable,9 Under Construction.09 October 2008.Update:Houses on the Pascagoula Beach on the Fourth Anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.

Pascagoula Tourism Pictures : Jimmy Buffett sang a song about his birthplace,and his uncle Billy, called the Pascagoula Run. Pascagoula (Bread Eaters) was, and still is, a fishing village, and is an industrial city with Standard Oil, now Chevron Pascagoula Refinery (Built 1963-Present) and Ingall's Shipbuilding (Built in the mid 1930's), which is the largest single employer in the State and has earned the title "The Flagship City" of Mississippi, and a "Sleepy little Town" as described by Ray Stevens in his Song "The Mississippi Squirell Revival". The city made it's major motion picture debut in 1999 in the Micheal Mann movie "The Insider" with Al Pacino,Russell Crowe,and Christopher Plummer about Big Tobacco and the States lawsuit and Victory against them. The City has the East and West Pascagoula River, also known as the "Singing River", and the only unaffected river by man, in the United States, that flows into the Gulf of Mexico. The Legend of the River is World Famous, with it's mysterious music. The singing sounds like a swarm of bees heard in late evenings during late summer,and autumn. Barely heard at first the music seems to grow nearer,and louder until it sounds as though it comes directly under foot. An old Indian legend connects the sound with the mysterious extinction of the Pascagoula Indians. Pascagoula means "Bread Eaters". The Pascagoula were a gentle tribe of contented innocent, inoffensive people, while the Biloxi were a tribe who considered themselves the "First People", and were enemies of the Pascagoula. Anola, a princess of the Biloxi Braves was in love with Altama, chief of the Pascagoula. Anola was betrothed to a chieftan of her own tribe, but fled to Altama. The sporned and enraged Biloxi chieftan led his Braves against Altama and the neighboring Pascagoula. The Pascagoula swore they would either save the young chief and his bride or perish with them. When thrown into battle the Pascagoula were outnumbered and were faced with enslavement by the Biloxi tribe or death. With their women and children leading the way, the Pascagoula joined hands and began to chant a song of death as they walked into the river until the last voice was hushed by the dark engulfing waters. Many believe the modern day sound is that of the death song of the Pascagoula tribe. Various hypothetical scientific explanations have been offered for this phenomenon, but none have been proven. The latest big story about Pascagoula was Hurricane Katrina. In 2005 the storm flooded most of the Houses south of I-10. The hurricane affected most ,of the near 30,000 ( Including us with a 56 to 59% damaged home, my mom and stepfather along with a lot of Uncles, Aunts, Cousins and many friends. Most, including us rebuilt ), residents in some form. Some way worse than others. 19 people in Jackson County lost their lives during and after the storm hit. 2 people were never identified and they are now buried in Macphelia cemetery under the names " John Love and Jane Mercy". The city was also affected by the recent B.P. Deepwater Horizon explosion and leak that occurred in April 2010. The people of Pascagoula are very resilient. They have survived and rebuilt after Hurricanes ( Hurricane of 1906 ), ( Hurricane of 1947 ), Betsy ( 1965 ), Camille (1969 ), Frederic ( 1979 ), Elena ( 1985 ), Georges ( 1998 ), Isadore ( 2002 ), Katrina ( 2005 ) and several other smaller storms Like Hurricane Gustav ( 2008 ), and Ike which caused minimal damage to the Mississippi Gulf Coast and the last storm, Hurricane Isaac ( 2012 ) which killed 2 people and caused $24.3 million in damage to Mississippi .

Car Wrecks.In remembrance of a great person,son,brother,and friend.04/27/71-02/28/98 : If you knew Phillip and are visiting this site,please leave a comment on one of the pictures or a gallery comment,Thanks.My brothers car wreck on the 20th of August 1991.Pictures 1-24,He passed away on February 28th,1998 as a result of injuries recieved in this car Wreck,and Troy Mathis is to blame.No One else.Hopefully one day I can forgive him.Please Respect these images,and don't copy them.I just want to share these with people to raise awareness.This wreck,not accident,or incident happened on Beach Boulevard in Pascagoula,MS.The speed limit is 25 MPH.The Mathis car was travelling around 80 MPH.There was no alcohol or drugs involved.The driver of the other car(Mathis)had just gotten out of school(High School)when this occured.I think he was probably showing off for the 2 friends that were passengers when the wreck happened.My brother was alone,and was coming home after a dental exam and stopping to get lunch at Edd's Drive Inn.

Industrial and Architechtural Photos : About this Guide Confrontations that impair the constitutional right to make images are becoming more common. To fight the abuse of your right to free expression, you need to know your rights to take photographs and the remedies available if your rights are infringed. The General Rule The general rule in the United States is that anyone may take photographs of whatever they want when they are in a public place or places where they have permission to take photographs. Absent a specific legal prohibition such as a statute or ordinance, you are legally entitled to take photographs. Examples of places that are traditionally considered public are streets, sidewalks, and public parks. Property owners may legally prohibit photography on their premises but have no right to prohibit others from photographing their property from other locations. Whether you need permission from property owners to take photographs while on their premises depends on the circumstances. In most places, you may reasonably assume that taking photographs is allowed and that you do not need explicit permission. However, this is a judgment call and you should request permission when the circumstances suggest that the owner is likely to object. In any case, when a property owner tells you not to take photographs while on the premises, you are legally obligated to honor the request. Some Exceptions to the Rule There are some exceptions to the general rule. A significant one is that commanders of military installations can prohibit photographs of specific areas when they deem it necessary to protect national security. The U.S. Department of Energy can also prohibit photography of designated nuclear facilities although the publicly visible areas of nuclear facilities are usually not designated as such. Members of the public have a very limited scope of privacy rights when they are in public places. Basically, anyone can be photographed without their consent except when they have secluded themselves in places where they have a reasonable expectation of privacy such as dressing rooms, restrooms, medical facilities, and inside their homes. Permissible Subjects Despite misconceptions to the contrary, the following subjects can almost always be photographed lawfully from public places: accident and fire scenes children celebrities bridges and other infrastructure residential and commercial buildings industrial facilities and public utilities transportation facilities (e.g., airports) Superfund sites criminal activities law enforcement officers Who Is Likely to Violate Your Rights Most confrontations are started by security guards and employees of organizations who fear photography. The most common reason given is security but often such persons have no articulated reason. Security is rarely a legitimate reason for restricting photography. Taking a photograph is not a terrorist act nor can a business legitimately assert that taking a photograph of a subject in public view infringes on its trade secrets. On occasion, law enforcement officers may object to photography but most understand that people have the right to take photographs and do not interfere with photographers. They do have the right to keep you away from areas where you may impede their activities or endanger safety. However, they do not have the legal right to prohibit you from taking photographs from other locations. They Have Limited Rights to Bother, Question, or Detain You Although anyone has the right to approach a person in a public place and ask questions, persistent and unwanted conduct done without a legitimate purpose is a crime in many states if it causes serious annoyance. You are under no obligation to explain the purpose of your photography nor do you have to disclose your identity except in states that require it upon request by a law enforcement officer. If the conduct goes beyond mere questioning, all states have laws that make coercion and harassment criminal offenses. The specific elements vary among the states but in general it is unlawful for anyone to instill a fear that they may injure you, damage or take your property, or falsely accuse you of a crime just because you are taking photographs. Private parties have very limited rights to detain you against your will and may be subject to criminal and civil charges should they attempt to do so. Although the laws in most states authorize citizen’s arrests, such authority is very narrow. In general, citizen’s arrests can be made only for felonies or crimes committed in the person’s presence. Failure to abide by these requirements usually means that the person is liable for a tort such as false imprisonment. They Have No Right to Confiscate Your Film Sometimes agents acting for entities such as owners of industrial plants and shopping malls may ask you to hand over your film. Absent a court order, private parties have no right to confiscate your film. Taking your film directly or indirectly by threatening to use force or call a law enforcement agency can constitute criminal offenses such as theft and coercion. It can likewise constitute a civil tort such as conversion. Law enforcement officers may have the authority to seize film when making an arrest but otherwise must obtain a court order. Your Legal Remedies If Harassed If someone has threatened, intimidated, or detained you because you were taking photographs, they may be liable for crimes such as kidnapping, coercion, and theft. In such cases, you should report them to the police. You may also have civil remedies against such persons and their employers. The torts for which you may be entitled to compensation include assault, conversion, false imprisonment, and violation of your constitutional rights. Other Remedies If Harassed If you are disinclined to take legal action, there are still things you can do that contribute to protecting the right to take photographs. (1) Call the local newspaper and see if they are interested in running a story. Many newspapers feel that civil liberties are worthy of serious coverage. (2) Write to or call the supervisor of the person involved, or the legal or public relations department of the entity, and complain about the event. (3) Make the event publicly known on an Internet forum that deals with photography or civil rights issues. How to Handle Confrontations Most confrontations can be defused by being courteous and respectful. If the party becomes pushy, combative, or unreasonably hostile, consider calling the police. Above all, use good judgment and don’t allow an event to escalate into violence. In the event you are threatened with detention or asked to surrender your film, asking the following questions can help ensure that you will have the evidence to enforce your legal rights: 1. What is the person’s name? 2. Who is their employer? 3. Are you free to leave? If not, how do they intend to stop you if you decide to leave? What legal basis do they assert for the detention? 4. Likewise, if they demand your film, what legal basis do they assert for the confiscation?
